When can I start my baby’s food diversification?
Most babies start weaning at around 6 months but of course, every baby is different. Some babies need more than milk a little earlier and others still aren’t ready for baby food at this stage.
How will I know when my baby is ready for baby food?
Most babies will let you know when they need more than milk to sustain them. Remember the following tips:
- Avoid introducing solid foods to a baby younger than 4 months
- Remember that weaning age varies from baby to baby
- After 4 months, your baby may start to be more difficult to settle or wake up hungry more often in the night – these can be signs that he is getting ready for food
What are the best first foods for babies?
In the first few days it’s a good idea to start baby on some fruit and vegetables which are naturally sweet. Make sure they’re well-cooked – apples, bananas, peaches, pears, carrots and spinach usually go down well.
Baby rice is also a good first food as it’s milk-based and easy for little tummies to digest.
Don’t feel bad if you don’t have time to prepare homemade food every day – babies have been eating pots for years and they are full of nutrition. Babies also love little yoghurt pots and other dairy products that you can buy from the supermarket.
Remember to give baby regular sips of water with food.
Advice: weaning safety
Just in case your baby chokes, always stay with him/her when he/she’s eating.
I want to start giving my baby solid food : any tips ?
In the early days, remember that breast milk or formula milk will still be the basis of your baby’s nutrition.
To help everything go smoothly, a few tips:
• only introduce solid food in one meal per day and on new taste / one new food at a time
• do it gradually – start with just a couple of mouthfuls
• even if sometimes you see more grimaces than smiles on your baby’s face, persevere and remember every food is a new taste to get used to
• weaning takes around 6 months, so take your time, relax and enjoy introducing your baby to new tastes
• if baby gets impatient and wants more and faster, you’ve cracked it!
• if baby won’t open his mouth don’t worry – he just might not be ready yet. Try to avoid conflicts over feeding and try again later
